The third presentation for my speech class was a persuasive one about Habitat for Humanity. It was about the organization, what they need (donations and volunteers) and what is done with the help the organization receives. Going into the speech, I was nervous about my timing. I had practiced it many times and the time varied from 5 minutes, 15 seconds to 6 minutes, 5 seconds. I had a 5-6 minute timeframe to occupy - any time over would mean a deduction in my grade.
It turned out that I spoke within the allotted timeframe (5 minutes, 32 seconds) and earned an "A". Out of 200 possible points, I received 197. My instructor would like me to work on extemporaneous speech and increase the effectiveness of my voice. These are the things I will work on for next week's speech - the Toast.
I felt this past speech was the easiest to prepare for because it was pretty cut-and-dry. The topic was formatted in a problem-solution manner on preceded by a brief background of the organization. The only part I felt that was difficult was getting the timing right.
The final speech for this course is a Toast. I'm struggling on deciding what to Toast about. It is to run between 2 and 3 minutes long and I have until Sunday to submit my manuscript. I'd better come up with something fast!
This may end up being the most difficult speech assignment for me yet. I think this because a Toast is something that comes naturally and from the heart. I don't think I will be able to portray that type of "acting" in my presentation. Let's hope I can pull this one off. Wish me luck!
