Dinner Party Menu?, Turnips, Oatmeal

After a week, you think I'd have a ton to talk about.  Well, it's been busy, that's for sure.  We had a wonderful weekend with friends.  I think we were home just enough to sleep and shower.  Now that the current week is half over, we have a whole new bundle of things to take care of - write a speech, prepare for a dinner party Friday, CLEAN!, laundry, play with the kids, homework, etc.

Jacob and I are blogging!

Alex actually wants his hair to be much taller.  We'll see...

The most exciting of projects, for me, is the dinner party.  Jacob is going to be baptized on May 29th and we're having the God parents and their spouses over for dinner on Friday to talk about the ceremony, traditions, etc.  I'm thinking of a 5-course meal.  My preliminary plans are the following:

  • SOUP:  Gnocchi in a light creamy broth
  • SALAD: Chopped Salad
  • APPETIZER: ????? Crab Cakes????  Stuffed roasted eggplant???? Anything at all????
  • ENTREE: Lasagna with garlic points
  • DESSERT:  ???? Maybe individual chocolate lava cakes with a chocolate sauce and ice cream?  I don't know!

So you see, there are some gaps.  If you have any ideas, please email me!  My plan today is to get the menu in order (meatless Friday!) and pick up the ingredients.  Tomorrow I'll prep some, Friday finish it off.  It'll be busy, but fun!

Speaking of food,  I made turnip mashed potatoes for the first time last night!  The turnips really added a delicious earthy flavor to the dish.  It was basic - turnips, red potatoes, butter, cream, salt and Boursin.  I mixed in some parsley and green onion at the end, more for color.  Yummy.  I whipped them instead of hand mashing (my preferred method).  They were delectable!  I also paired olive-oil and garlic sauteed asparagus with a peppered pork loin (apparently my family is loving the pork loins lately, this is our second one in two or three weeks!).  The pork was cooked perfectly - it melted like butter in your mouth.  A toothless person could have enjoyed it! :)

We love both asparagus AND tons of garlic!

You wouldn't know there were turnips in there if I didn't tell you!
So for now I'm sitting at a local Caribou enjoying my $2 medium macadamia coconut mocha (GO TWINS!).  I decided to try their 7-grain oatmeal today.  It's packed with grainy oat goodness.  I chose to top it with maple brown sugar crunch, dried cranberries and almonds.  Quite tasty and healthy too!

Sorry, I ate nearly all of it before thinking to snap a pic.

Jacob and I are finishing this blog and menu, then its off to get Alex from preschool.  Busy, busy, busy - as always! :)

Thank you for reading!
